Breaking Chains
Kavita creates her own paths
Breaking Chains
Kavita joined the Saathi Centre as a computer student in 2016. In her family, the decision-making power was held by her two elder brothers, who were the primary wage earners. She faced numerous restrictions and a lack of support for her education and career aspirations. She shares that ''I had many restrictions imposed on me like not being allowed to work, having to return home on time, not going out with friends, not talking to boys among others''
Kavita felt fearful about sharing her thoughts and experiences with her family but was conformable in confiding with the Saathi team. ''I joined as a volunteer. The token money I received helped me independently pay for my college fees and other expenses. Currently, I am pursuing my Master's degree and working at the ISST Yuva Saathi Centre as a staff member. The youth view me as an idol, ''she expressed proudly.'' ''To complete my MSW field placement, I made the decision to go to Jagori Himachal. It was my first experience managing communication and coordination for my education. My battle against patriarchal norms within my family and community is ongoing. However, I find happiness in my work and thoroughly enjoy my life. The community and youth have embraced me wholeheartedly, and I am respected in my field of work.''
