Dharmendra's Transformative Journey
EMPOWERED THROUGH SKILLS
Dharmendra joined ISST's community center as a computer student, at the young age of 13 years. He was studying in class VIII at that time and hailed from a marginalized community in East Delhi. With a strong desire to learn about computers, he reminisces, ''In 2005, I joined the ISST community center. I also became a part of the 'Nakshatra' theater group and actively participated in group discussions, which boosted my confidence.
When I reached class X, I started volunteering at the 'Saathi Center' to teach computers. It was a proud moment for me when I began the classes with just two computers and five students. Since then there has been no looking back! I attended numerous SEL workshops and received training in computer-related programs through ISST, all while striving to become a better human being. After two years of volunteering and completing my 12th grade, I decided to pursue a career in computers. ISST then offered me the opportunity to join as a full-time staff member, as a computer instructor.''
Dharmendra managed to simultaneously pursue his higher education (Masters) while working. Reflecting on his journey, he said, ''If I hadn't joined ISST, I might have ended up as a laborer or drug addict. The income I earned from ISST allowed me to teach my siblings and support my household expenses. I also made efforts to challenge the traditional beliefs within my family and the community I served. Against the opposition of my family and community, I encouraged my younger sister to pursue a career as a taxi driver.''
